From memory there is a 12 volt feed at pin 3 and the valve is controlled (open/closed using a pulse width modulated ground signal from the pcm) When the valve moves open /close the voltage should vary at pin 4. From memory it's 0.98-4.45 volts open to close (or close to this ) 1. Firstly the inlet manifold and the EGR valve gets covered in a layer of unburned diesel and oil, this on it's own isn't an issue but when the oil vapour from the crank case breather enters the intake and mixes with the unburned fuel it causes a thick sticky tar which coats the inside of the inlet manifold and EGR valve.
